What is the Causal Body?

The Causal Body is the energy system for our Mental experience. But before we jump in, let’s recap.

Quick Recap

There are three energy bodies:

  1. Etheric body, tied to the physical body (if you haven’t yet read about the etheric energy system, that’s a great place to start)
  2. Astral body, the energy system for our emotional experience. This is the system that includes the chakras that are most often talked about.
  3. Mental body, divided into mental and causal subplanes or fields

The Mental Body is a split plane. The two components are the (1) Mental subplane and the (2) Causal subplane. Each are quite different and very unusually paired in your Mental Body.

Mental:

  • Cells & Structures / Systems & Processes for Human Body
  • Concrete Intellect
  • Higher Mind

Causal:

  • Karmic Load
  • Belief Systems
  • Soul Light

Concrete Intellect

When we think about the mind-body connection, a lot of people think in terms of their concrete intellect (their thinker). The part that’s able to make a grocery list and generate big ideas. But there’s so much more going on in your mental body.

Cells & Structures / Systems & Processes for the Human Body

Your mental body connects deeply with your physical body. There are subplanes in the Mental body that I find fascinating because they’re tied to the cells, structures and functions of your physical body. If we didn’t have this information held in the mental plane, then my heart might breathe and your heart might pump blood. What we need in order to have proper body function is a coherent agreement across the idea of the human body that says “the heart pumps blood and the lungs breathe”. Those kinds of functions are actually agreed upon and held in place in the Mental plane and our mental bodies so that our physical bodies perform the ways they’re supposed to. Fascinating, right?

Same with our cells. All of our cells have specific functions that are agreed to so that a skin cell does something very different than a cell lining your intestine. Even though both are processing energy (and air and blood, etc.), each cell knows its distinct role by virtue of the information held in the Mental plane.

Higher Mind – When you operate at the genius level

There’s also a part of the mental body that we would call the Higher Mind or the part of your intellect that operates at a genius level. People like Tesla and Einstein spent a lot of time in the Higher Mind – that place where scientific discovery is actualized. For a lot of us, we spend most of our time in the concrete intellect and then some time in that genius space. Think about the times when you have a brilliant idea, and you know it’s powerful and right. That’s when you’re up in your Higher Mind.

In summary, the Mental Body is mind with form. The concrete intellect allows you to generate ideas, whether it’s a shopping list or the idea of building a Tesla. The concrete intellect and the Higher Mind are forming ideas that then become real. And, of course, the cells and structures of the body are also have form, mass, density.

Now that we’ve covered the components of the Mental subplane, we can turn our awareness to the Causal subplanes.

The Causal Body

The Causal Mind is formless mind. The formless mind of the Causal subplanes carries three fascinating esoteric aspects that we can learn to access and evolve. One: it carries our karmic load.

Karmic Load

If you’ve studied energy, you may know about karma and you may have a sense of what karma is, and so for those of you who don’t have a sense, a tiny primer: my essence-self has chosen this particular incarnation, and I’m working out a bunch of stuff while I’m here, and what I’m working out is – in part – my karma from other lifetimes.

I’ve done good things in other lifetimes (I hope), and therefore, have positive karma from which I’m benefitting. I also have negative karma that are causative factors or hidden inspiration for experiences that I create and explore to work through and resolve. The whole system of debits and credits (our karmic load) is available to us (we can access it) and is stored in the Causal subplanes. Across incarnations, as I resolve negative karma, and as I spend positive karma, my “balance sheet” gets updated in the Causal subplanes. I know that everything I’m doing in this lifetime is creating some set of karma for whatever I do next. [I won’t get into the part where all time is simultaneous and we’re having all of our incarnations right now. We’ll save that for another post and video!]

The thing to note at this point is that Karmic information is accessed and updated in the Causal subplanes. As students and clients at EHI learn to practice deep, specific energy work, they can consciously access their Karma in the Causal, and then clear energy in the Astral Field (the Emotional body) to evolve their energy and their karma. They’re not canceling out their karma, they’re evolving their energy and subsequently, their experience.

Belief Systems

Your belief systems are also created in the Causal subplane. If you listened to the Astral video, you know that belief systems are actualizing through your sixth chakra, in the center of your head. However they’re not created in the sixth chakra. They’re created in the Causal subplanes, and they essentially get downloaded to the 6th chakra, so you can use your beliefs to attract and frame your experience.

I’m going to give you an example of a belief system:

When I was a young girl, my mom and I walked past a woman wearing white pumps. It was after Labor Day, and my mother looked at me and said, “Jill, do you see that? That woman is wearing white pumps. Doesn’t she know that it’s after Labor Day, and you don’t wear white pumps after Labor Day?” As an impressionable 7-year old, I immediately accepted the belief that wearing white pumps after Labor Day was wrong and probably even bad (because there was a lot of tone and judgement in my mother’s voice). For years, as I’d walk through town and see women wearing white shoes after Labor Day, I’d know that they were wrong.

Flash forward 10-12 years, and I realize I don’t care! I don’t care what shoes people wear after Labor Day. And so in that moment, I was able to shift my belief system, and I no longer needed people wearing white shoes to be wrong. It was an instant thing because it really held no weight in my sense of self.

But what about other beliefs? Those beliefs like I’m not thin enough, I’m not smart enough, I’m not funny enough, I’m not pretty enough, I’m not fill-in-the-blank enough? Those beliefs get formed in the causal subplanes as a result of our experiences (somehow, somewhere we’re told we’re fat or we’re not smart or whatever it might be), and we take them in, and we make them True. And then, using our Astral and Etheric & Mental/Causal energy systems, through our chakras, we go out and create experiences where we can be Right. We find ourselves to be not pretty enough, smart enough, thin enough, funny enough, rich enough, whatever it is…

We can learn to work in the Causal subplanes to shift our belief systems. It’s truly powerful to be able to shift long-held, limiting beliefs, knowing that as they shift, the Astral 6th chakra will ‘get the memo’, and begin resonating and actualizing an evolved experience. It’s a beautiful thing.

Soul Light

The last thing that is up there in the Causal subplane is the ability to perceive the Soul Light. This is a really interesting construct, and I’ll share the teachings at just an overview-level because it’s fairly complex. But here’s the idea:

The Soul is accessible to you. Through the Causal subplanes, you can learn to access the Light of the Soul as it shines down into the Causal.

Your soul learns from you. When you’ve completed an experience, and grokked (deeply understood and acknowledged) the learnings, teachings, insights and benefits of that experience, the grokked information is accessible to the soul in the Causal subplanes, and it can and does learn from your completed awareness. You’re always in connection with your soul through the Causal subplanes. You can actually learn from your soul through the Causal connection.

I like to note that the soul doesn’t enter the physical body, nor does the soul doesn’t enter the emotional body.

You are a sovereign being and you access your soul through the Causal subplanes. In authentic connections to the soul, it’s easy to think the connection  happened in the physical body, often reported as occurring in the heart, but in reality, it’s happening in the Causal subplanes.

Four Other Planes

There are actually four other planes that are another fascinating aspect of expanded consciousness and our ‘body’. They operate in such different ways, and are quite esoteric. I’ll cover them at another time.

I do hope that this series has been useful for you, and you feel more informed about Who You Are and the beauty, elegance, complexity and integration of your energy bodies.

  1. Jill, Thank you for this insightful article. I’m curious about the four “sub planes” you mentioned. Hope you’d consider writing about them in a future article. In the meantime, could you share what names would you refer to these four sub planes as?

    Thanks again.

  2. In this article you talked about karma and that you wouldn’t go into how our lives are lived simultaneously in this article. Could you please refer me to the article where you do discuss this. I have been trying to understand this for a while. Everyone talks about karma and life lessons and how they affect the next life but I cannot understand how this works when all lives are happening simultaneously.

    Regards

    • Hi Lynn, I haven’t written an article about karma and concurrent lifetimes, but let me share a little bit here to help contextualize the scenario. And then…I’ve written down the topic for a future article. Hopefully I’ll get to write it relatively soon!

Karma and concurrent lifetimes exist within the concept of both non-duality, where all lifetimes are happening concurrently, and in duality, where this lifetime is rolling out. We don’t have an experience of all lifetimes occurring concurrently because we hang out in the space/time continuum, where one day follows another, years roll by, and we age as the decades pass. Our karma gets played out within the context of our individual lifetime that we’re experiencing as whatever personality we’re embodying this time around. In other words, I’m Jill, a white woman from the Northeast who now lives in Oregon and is 60 years old. You’re Lynn, you appear to be from the UK, and you’re however old you are now. Our personalities have a variety of experiences throughout the course of this individual incarnation that draws upon the karma that resonates in this particular lifetime.

There are systems of thought that say that we have thousands upon thousands of lifetimes, so it’s not possible to complete the overall balance of the karmic ‘debits and credits’ we’ve accrued in any one lifetime.

Outside of the space/time continuum, your essence (not your personality, which is tied to a specific incarnation) is experiencing multiple lifetimes concurrently, and the entire account of karmic debits and credits are being accrued and spent. Once the essence has spent down all of the credits and balanced out all of the debits, the essence will no longer need to incarnate. The journey from Source back to Source will be completed.

This is a lot to take in, but when you remember that our lives are a both/and…a space-time, here and now individualized experience and a non-dualistic concurrent experience that our essence is navigating, then karma becomes one of the many moving parts in the overall whole.

      Does that help?

    • Hi Zahra, It’s not appropriate to try and destroy a block in someone else’s energy. If you feel as though your heart is blocking someone, it would be appropriate to learn to do some chakra and aura clearing to restore balance and harmony to your heart.

  3. HI
I wondered what does this mean

“teh grokked information is accessible to teh soul in teh Causal subplanes”
i do not know the word grokked?

    I am trying to understand
    thank you Mary

    • Hi Mary, Thanks for checking in on the idea of grokking!

The word ‘grok’ is a shamanic term that I’ve learned to love over time. It means to understand something systemically…as if every cell in your being knows and understands the information. So in the case of the phrase, ‘the grokked information is accessible to the soul’, it would mean that you as a personality had a powerful and comprehensive insight that your soul can learn from because of your understanding and experience. Does that make sense?

  4. Thank you, I have just been searching for information approximately this topic for a while and yours is the greatest
I’ve came upon so far. But, what about the conclusion? Are you sure
    about the supply?

    • Hi Jamila, Thanks for your feedback about the Causal body. I’m so glad it’s been helpful to you. I teach this information to EHI practitioners to help them work more concretely with energy healing with their clients. They’re very expansive concepts, and I find them to be thought provoking and so helpful in understanding Who We Are. You ask about the conclusion, and if I’m sure about the ‘supply’. I believe you might have meant the word ‘soul’? The system that I have worked in for the past 30 years is one that is based on sovereignty. In other words, the individual is connected to All That Is, yet retains full sovereignty over their life experience. If the soul is dictating experience, then sovereignty would belong to the soul and the individual would be its puppet. I appreciate this distinction and find it enormously comforting to think of the soul as a resource to my evolution, with full sovereignty in my own hands. Hope that’s helpful to you!

  5. hi Jill,
my name is Christy and i have a question about how the soul is not in our physical body … or that it doesnt enter our physical body but instead is a consciousness and it would actually violate individual sovereignty if it entered the body. i thought consciousness was located in the brain… i tried and tried but havent yet been able to understand how our soul is outside our body or how our consciousness is outside our body. i read this whole article, all the comments, your replies and i i am excited to read everything i can that are listed below. i would deeply appreciate if you could reply and help me grasp this. thank you for all you are doing, peace to you. thank you again, Christy

    • Hi Christy, Thanks for your question about the soul and the physical body. There’s so much more I can say about the soul than I have thus far. And of course, different energy healing and spiritual systems have different perspectives on the placement of the soul. In this system, it’s an incredibly important concept to take in and understand. In a nutshell, the soul is a conglomerate…it’s not a one-to-one correlation between your personality and incarnated experience and the soul. There are multiple essences (incarnated personalities across time and space) that make up a soul awareness. The soul is a learning, evolving growing construct that learns and grows through you and the other essences that make up the ‘soul family’. The soul is permissive, curious, inspired and evolving as you grow and evolve. Whenever you truly grok something (understand at a wholly embodied level), your soul learns. You’ve integrated something important and you own this awareness as an incarnated essence. The soul gets an upload of your integrated understanding and all members of the ‘soul family’ then have access to your insight…as you do to theirs.

Lots of systems say that the soul dictates or drives the choices of the essence self. That removes the individual essence’s sovereignty and free will, because it’s in service to a construct that gets to choose and decide on the essence’s behalf.

It’s a very freeing concept to understand that you get to choose, every minute of every day, what you engage, interact with, learn, do, try, succeed and fail at doing, learning, becoming, evolving. It’s all about you. And the soul loves every minute of what you choose, and learns from your choices and owned insights.

      Hope that’s helpful to you!

    • Hi Tina, I teach a meditation with EHI practitioners on accessing the Causal subplanes. While I don’t necessarily recommend doing this by yourself without guidance and feedback, you can think of the subplanes as the keys on a piano. You can begin in the Astral body, the 3rd subplane, where our emotional energy resides most of the time. In meditation, you can walk yourself up the Astral subplanes, into the Mental and eventually up into the Causal. If this is something you’d really like to experience, I’d be happy to help you have the experience. We’d need to do so in a private session, which you can learn about on the 1:1 section of my website. I’ve been thinking a bit about doing an online course on the Causal subplanes, but it’s just in thinking stages. It wouldn’t likely be available until late 2019. You can do some work in your 6th chakra on your belief systems. That’s where the beliefs are housed (they’re created in the Causal). That’s another thing to consider. You can learn to clear your 6th chakra in my CLEAR Course (see Online Courses).

  6. Hi Jill,
Thank you for this information! I am studying energy bodies and have a question about the soul body. It is my understanding that everything is energy and the bodies are just vibrating at a higher and higher rate as they extend out, and that all of the energy bodies are are also present within the body…at some point there is just one universal body of which we are all one. From that point of view, I’m trying to grasp how the soul body does not enter the physical body. Just curious…
    Thanks! Lisa

    • Hi Lisa, Thanks for your question about the soul and its role in physical experience. Your understanding is accurate, everything is indeed energy. And some of the energy has enough density and mass to create physical form, the human body (and other physical, sentient beings). The soul is a higher level consciousness, vibrating at a much higher frequency than the body. Certainly at one level, we live in unity awareness, and are truly one with all. But that’s not how we experience our lives, is it? In other words, we have an understanding, perhaps even a momentary glimmer of our oneness, yet we still all put our pants on one leg at a time! And we do it on our own (mostly). We’re individuated beings, we each have our own dharma, karma and evolutionary trajectory that we choose and create moment by moment. The soul is a learning and coalescing consciousness that grows and evolves through our individual experiences. It’s non-interfering and doesn’t actually need or want to enter the physical body as it would violate our individual sovereignty by doing so. We’re always in collaboration with the soul, but it’s not part of our physical body or physical experience. I hope that answers your question.
